Country Overview

Over the last 20 years, Uganda’s relative stability and progressive refugee policies have made it the destination for an estimated 1.5 million+ registered refugees, including people fleeing conflict and instability in South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Burundi. Due to instability in bordering countries, Uganda receives regular influxes of asylum seekers, and its refugee population continue growing.

The continuous growth of the refugee population requires a comprehensive understanding of humanitarian needs vis-à-vis declining humanitarian funds and the ongoing prioritization of general food assistance. Furthermore, information on the needs of host communities and the effect of the growing refugee and host populations on the demand for and provision of services – as well as the changing demographics – is in greater demand. In addition, a more in-depth understanding of the effects of climate change on vulnerable populations’ lives is also needed.

IMPACT has worked in Uganda since 2017, providing evidence-based information for humanitarian and development actors in support of strategic planning.
